Hello class,
I apologize for the late post. I am in the middle of packing my house to move next weekend.
Policies impact transportation and logistics management in a number of ways. The Oxford
English Dictionary defines policy as a principle or course of action adopted as desirable,
advantages, or expedient. There are many policies in effect for transportation and logistics to
ensure that the transport of products and goods is done in a manner to prevent delayed
shipment or damage of shipment in transit. There are also policies regarding the method of
transportation and how it can impact the environment. These policies impact transportation
and logistics management by changing the way they operate. For example, the US General
Services Administration (GSA) has policies for transporting government property or
employee’s personal effects on behalf of the government transportation program. This policy
provides guidance on the shipment of government property before, during, and after shipping.
This policy is to ensure that the shipment goes smoothly, is executed properly, and protects
the government’s best interests. This policy changes how logistics and transportation operate
when transporting government equipment and this policy refers to local or regional policies
for specific requirements such as transportation and environmental factors.
In the example provided in the discussion, retailers can have some significant impacts by
policies on transportation from the port to the retailer location. The Safety policy is one that
can impact retailers greatly. The safety policy sets policies on railroads, trucks, ships, and
other forms of transportation. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration
(NHTSA) sets vehicle design standards and the FMCSA sets policies for drivers that include
hours of service and other safety rules. These policies can impact the costs of the carriers to
the extent that they have to pass the costs on to the retailers.
Policies can also impact the emerging concept of green logistics. The GSA has been
collaborating with industry partners to create a policy that reduces energy and environmental
footprints. This can impact the cost and operations of green logistics and green supply chain
management. Examples of this include PepsiCo. They follow a Sustainable Farming Program
that focuses on assessing the company’s direct farmers and growers, protecting human rights,
and implementing regenerative agricultural practices.

Hello Class,
Transport policy aims to determine the strategic distribution of transport
resources, encompassing the management and regulation of current
transportation operations. On the other hand, transport planning pertains to the
efficient execution of these measures (The Geography of Transport Systems,
2023). Transportation and logistics management regulations profoundly affect
product flow, retailers, and the whole supply chain. Municipal, state, and federal
law significantly affects businesses’ ability to effectively convey commodities from
ports to retailers—regulations governing pipelines, canals, roads, railroads, and air
transport impact merchants and supply chains. There is a complicated link
between policy decisions and the efficient flow of goods in the retail sector, and
these decisions can affect any mode of transportation. For example, the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) & Compliance Safety Accountability
(CSA) program, which regulates the trucking companies retailers hire, can affect
retailers by analyzing dangerous driving, fatigued driving, driver fitness (licenses),
alcohol or drugs, maintenance, and safe freight movement, established regulations
for drivers on the road continually transporting goods for merchants. This is
related to the importance of endorsements in selling products. They can also
determine the maximum number of consecutive hours a motor carrier can operate
while transporting goods. This can cap the volume of goods carried in a given
period (FMCSA, n.d.).
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that refers to the creation of Cyber-
Physical Systems (CPS) that link to the Internet and gather, share, and act on data
about various physical processes. Smart cities, intelligent transportation,
entertainment, security, agriculture, and healthcare are a few IoT application
areas. The IoT is significantly changing how people undertake many daily tasks,
especially in making many of these activities much more accessible when
combined with advancements in artificial intelligence—IoT device availability and
expansion. IoT may be used to track the movement of goods and materials to
maintain proper levels of availability and assist the migration of supply to where it
is needed, improving the efficiency and transparency of supply chains. Tracking
commodities through production, warehousing, and delivery will be more
accessible by augmented logistics. The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) is thoroughly reviewing its existing regulatory framework
to find and eliminate any provisions that might impede this transformation. This
review includes clarifying current regulations, creating a framework for federal and
state regulations, and identifying new regulatory tools necessary to fulfill DOT’s
safety mission in an era of quickly evolving technology. Political trends, such as the
implementation of new infrastructure, trade policies, and laws, influence the
evolution of the transportation environment. To navigate the intricate
environment successfully, seize opportunities, and reduce risks (DOT).
