Module 1 Discussion Question Chapter 1

In Chapter 1, we see that the National Association of Colleges and Employers has found that employers most desire good communication skills in the college graduates they may hire. Moreover, research has shown that introductory communication courses provide important skills necessary for functioning in entry-level jobs, including listening, writing, motivating/persuading, interpersonal skills, informational interviewing, and small-group problem solving. Considering all the above, respond to the following questions:

  • Do you think you are a good communicator?
  • What have you taken from Chapter 1 that will be your first step towards a better understanding of communication that will help you become a better communicator? 

Remember to cite your text using either MLA or APA style. If you have a hard copy of the Flat World book, then cite using page numbers. If you use a digital copy, then cite using chapter and section numbers. If you do not cite, your posting will not be graded.

According to Chapter 2, schemata are sets of information based on cognitive and experiential knowledge that guide our interaction. We rely on schemata almost constantly to help us make sense of the world around us. Sometimes schemata become so familiar that we use them as scripts, which prompts mindless communication and can lead us to overlook new information that may need to be incorporated into the schema.  Choose one of the videos in Module 2 and apply this concept.

In Chapter 3, we see that society and culture influence the words that we speak, and the words that we speak influence society and culture. Considering this, answer the following questions:

  • How do you interpret this thought?
  • How does this affect your life and your interactions with others?
  • Provide an example of a situation that you feel might highlight this.
  • Explain how it is illustrated in one of the module videos.

In Chapter 4, we see that in terms of communicating emotions, competent communicators know when it is appropriate to express emotions and when more self-regulation is needed. Offer up several examples of situations that you were in where non-verbal communication was observed. How did you feel about it? Was it used correctly? Did you or the other person use it to your own benefit? Use at least one of the videos provided and your textbook to support your opinion.
