Peer 1(AM):

How difficult was it to find these forms?

I didn’t find it very difficult at all to find a medical power of attorney or a living will form. A quick Google search and many different choices pulled up. There were options where the forms were drawn up and you just had to fill it in with your information and other options where you typed in your information and it would be generated for you to print out the forms.

Do you feel they are important for an older adult to have?

I do think it’s important for an older adult to have. Life can come at you with very unexpected changes, by having these two forms you are appointing someone to make decisions for you when you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself. This could prevent you from potentially not receiving the desired end-of-life care that you wised for as well as provide clarity and closure to your loved ones, prevent conflict or disagreements among the people making your decisions, and prevent further emotional burden on your family at the time of death (Singleton, 2019).

Would an older adult need help finding them? completing them?

I think an older adult might benefit from someone helping them obtain these forms. I was able to quickly locate them using the internet, however many older adults didn’t grow up using computers and still don’t know how to use them or have access to them, therefore they’d probably need help locating these forms and filling them out, or finding a law firm that could help them draw up the paperwork.

Has this assignment made you change your opinion regarding advance directives? (Are they only needed for older adults?)

It’s definitely made me think twice about it, and I don’t think only older adults need advance directives. Like I mentioned earlier, life can come at you with a lot of unexpected and unknown changes. On any day and at any time your life could change, and you could be unable to make decisions for yourself, having these documents to express your wishes could assure your life/end-of-life care is carried out the way that you want it to. Any person at any age could benefit from having these forms ready to go in case of an emergency.

How difficult was it to find these forms?  

For someone that is technological savvy, I believe the advance directive documents were extremely easy to find. However, as with most older adults, especially this student’s own parents who have a hard time just downloading an app from the app store, I believe the advanced directive documents can be extremely hard to locate and download for an older adult. The reasoning for this statement is that the older adult needs to type Living Will in a search engine, find a reputable site, and then find the download button within that site, which is kind of much for people that grew up with cell phones or computers.

 Do you feel they are important for an older adult to have?     

While I feel uneasy with the thought that my parents can decide not to have medical intervention in the case of being incapacitated, and there is nothing I can do about it (The Principal Law Firm, 2020), I do believe they can be important for an older adult to have, as they are in control of their life, not us. I also believe that certain documents such as a power of attorney can be important if the trustee is trustworthy, which can be both a pro or con of this document (National Caregivers Library, 2019). This instance can be elaborated more on several news stories where a step-parent tries to make medical decisions over the document holder’s children to prematurely end a loved one’s life to inherit the document holder’s finances, this can also be vice versa.

As previously stated in an earlier paragraph, I believe an older adult will need help locating the documents online, if not presented in person by a lawyer. As for the question regarding if this document is easy to complete once in hand, I believe so. With a straightforward format and precise details within, I believe an older adult should have no issues with completing this document.

Even after researching these documents for this discussion and upcoming assignment, I am still up in the air about my opinion regarding them. This is due to several pros and cons, which to be honest both carry the same weight. I believe and still believe that under certain circumstances, these documents are incredibly important and that they are not just for the older adult, but all adults.
