 Discussion 1

Children’s toys tend to be specifically marketed toward kids of one gender, either boys or girls. “Boy” toys tend to be associated with action, such as building, fighting, or playing sports, while “girl” toys tend to be more associated with domestic work, such as playing house, cooking food, or taking care of a baby. The gender division of these toys serves as one example of how children are socialized to understand gender roles. Read the New York Times article Guys and Dolls No More? to better understand the role that kids’ toys play in the division of gender roles.

The above is a just one example of agents of socialization, which are structured situations, such as families, schools, the media, and peer groups, where socialization takes place. In other words, they are agents that teach us how to behave and help us internalize values, beliefs, and norms.

For this discussion, select one agent of socialization and describe a specific norm that one might learn from that source. Be sure to describe the process of how the norm you chose is learned and internalized. Then, discuss how the norm might influence a particular social role.

Please review this hypothetical scenario and answer the questions that follow.

A.B. grew up in India and has come to America for college. He lived with an Indian family during his freshman year of college and enjoyed the taste of familiar cuisine; as the mother of the family cooked much like his own.  However, he moved into an apartment with three other international students, all from different countries. The group of college students have similar interests and are close friends.  A.B. remains devoted to his education and studies long hours. He admits he does not want to take time to cook, so he eats mostly convenience food. He has found some Indian convenience foods; they aren’t as good as home cooking but he does enjoy the familiar taste. He is acquiring a taste for American food and he and his friends often order pizza together.  A.B. usually eats fast food for lunch because it is inexpensive and quick to eat.

What specific nutrition and health related concerns do you have about his eating habits?

What practical changes could A.B. make to make his eating habits more consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans?

Discussion 3

Patty was recently in a serious car accident. She broke her arm and suffered significant bruising. She was relieved that she didn’t have serious internal bleeding or injuries.  She and her family were also happy to hear that it is unlikely to have any long-term physical or mental disability, since she is only 33 years old. With her broken arm, it is difficult for her to prepare food and she is surprised that in the 2 weeks since the accident, her clothes are feeling quite loose. She hasn’t been very active while she’s been recovering and assumed weight loss would not occur.

  • How would you explain Patty’s weight loss?
  • A friend of Patty’s gave her a “healing complex” vitamin-mineral supplement to help her body recover. Should Patty take these supplements? Why or why not?
  •  What suggestions would you make to Patty to help her eat healthfully with only one arm available for food preparation and eating?
