  1. (15 pts) Leonard Bernstein, in a 24 minute youtube video, provides an introduction to jazz. While the entire 24 minutes is quite valuable, please focus your attention between Counter Numbers 18:25 through 23: 37. Bernstein discusses the classic, 12-bar, blues. Focus on the term,” iambic pentameter”. Also included are terms such as, “break”, syncopation, hymn tunes, chords and especially how a Shakespeare sonnet can be set to a blues tune. Describe all that you learned about this segment concerning the blues and perhaps your misconception might have been about the blues.  Link Provided to Bernstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqY5UFQxIl0.  Keep it between 200 and 300 words if possible.

4. (5 pts) Would you say that “Folsom Prison Blues”, from the textbook recording follows the “Classic” form of the 12-bar blues in rhymed couplet  as described by Bernstein? This answer may be somewhat subjective, but please try defending your answer by referring to the Bernstein youtube lecture and not just the author of the textbook.

  1. (2pts)  Homophonic texture is a music term that I covered in a short video presentation, Scales and Intervals, week 1. It’s a rather simple concept which describes homophonic as a single solo instrument playing the main melody accompanied by an instrument or several instruments playing harmony and rhythm or a lead singer accompanied by chords played on guitar or piano or even by an orchestra or band. Almost all children’s songs, pop and country music songs are homophonic. Why is “Folsom Prison Blues”, homophonic? A short answer will suffice.
  2. (10 pts)  Write a brief synopsis on the material listed for Sfkids part 1 by including the parts that were most helpful with music basics.  150 to 300 words will suffice. The link was provided in SFSkids part 1.
