Aging is a stage of life that all human beings must undergo. From birth to death, along these stages, there are some changes in life that will help us to grow as a person. Maturity is one of the aspects of life-changing behavior regarding our decision making, in achieving our goals/dreams, having our own family, and helping the community.

Some of the typical characteristics of aging might be manifested physically such as changes in the texture of our skin, the color of our hair, our eyesight changes too, and experiencing atrophy of the muscles. As we age, we lost adipose tissue and cannot tolerate the cold environment. In terms of sickness due to old age, many elders experiencing arthritis, hypertension, diabetes, and the most common among elders are dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In terms of behavior, we think in mature ways. We are looking forward to self-development and improvement in life. Mostly, we think about job security and a good retirement. At this age, people grew up not just thinking about themselves but also about others. How can we contribute to society? As we get older, we become closer to God. Some folks spend time in the church or charitable organization by serving the Lord and actively participating in the community.

Aging is an unavoidable part of life. It will always come and must be prepared for the changes. It is a matter of how we handle the process of aging. Acceptance of aging of my parent. In the Philippines, we don’t have nursing homes or assisted living to put your parent. It’s the obligation of the children based on our culture to help parents. We must divide the responsibilities and make sure our mother being take care of. There are a lot of changes after the retirement age of our mother like she doesn’t listen to her children, being hardheaded, and sometimes not in the mood. Our mother used to be active as a school principal. There are lots of adjustments and compromises to consider.

As staff working in a skilled nursing home, I have seen a lot of different faces. Some are happy and active. Seeing aging is a part of life. Some are sad because their loved ones sent them to our facility for long-term care due to dementia or nobody will take care of them at home because everybody is working. Some never heard of their family and only close friends acting as their emergency contacts. I have learned to be positive in life. Problems are always there and must face them. Life must continue and always be happy. Not all are given the opportunity to experience the aging process.
