An important consideration of my dissertation journey after identifying my research topic, methodology, and design is to establish a dissertation committee consisting of one chair and two members who may possess research competence and experience in a quantitative research approach to provide support and guidance to enable me to accomplish my goals and anticipated outcomes. For instance, a study committee of members having expertise in my field of study, financial management, can lead me to relevant literature to develop my debate. In selecting my chair and committee members, the following actions are necessary. First, I will review the biographies of the chairs and members based on my research topic, design, approach, and method to see if their research interests align well with my research interests. Next, I will send emails to those chairs and committee members whose research interests line up with mine to find out about their availability and then schedule a 15-minute meeting with each to discuss my research topic, methodology, design, and goals (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). Third, once I get a chair and two committee members who are interested in my topic and thus, want to serve on my dissertation committee, I will send their details to the Academics department and wait for feedback on the next step to take.
I expect my choice of a chair and two committee members to provide support and guidance to me throughout my doctoral process by adding further perspectives with their expertise and experiences in research to help me realize my project goal and expected outcomes. Therefore, I will need the committee to help me with the following. First, assists me in developing the research idea or topic for my dissertation project, reading the drafts and revised proposals, and providing constructive feedback or criticisms. Next, directs me to come up with a realistic timeline for implementing each milestone of the project. Third, advises on the type of data (i.e., primary, or secondary) and its source, choice of procedures for gathering data, and suitable techniques for analyzing data. I will also need the committee to prepare me for my dissertation proposal and final defense. Lastly, to avoid any ethical issues, I will require assistance in navigating the institutional review board (IRB) approval process of the University. The support of my selected committee chair and members can substantially influence the success of my doctoral project. Therefore, the selection and composition of my dissertation committee are significant to the effective conduct of my dissertation to generate a high-quality management scholarship.

Selecting my committee is an extremely important step in my doctoral journey, and I’m excited to share how I’ve gone about this crucial task. First off, I would be happy to have any of the experienced educators and practitioners be part of my committee, but I have kept in mind that my committee’s makeup will have a significant impact on my research direction. So, I’ve been quite deliberate about this selection. Generally, my thoughts align with the advice outlined by Hardy (2022), who is a PhD scholar at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Hardy (2022) recommends that you search for committee members that can provide support for your research method, expertise in your content area, and individuals with whom you can work well. As such, I have laid out some key criteria to lead my selections.
Experience with Organizational Management
One of the main considerations in forming my committee has been the need for expertise in organizational management. Given the business relevance of our research, I have sought individuals with substantial experience in this field. My research centers around healthcare worker productivity, and while that has obvious business implications, I am hopeful that insights and perspectives from my committee will help me clarify how the findings of my study can be applied in a broader business sense – rather than just focused on healthcare itself. My hope is that my committee and committee chair’s proficiency in business management and strategy will help me translate my research outcomes into practical applications.
Qualitative Research Experience
Although my initial research methodology was mixed methods, I have since decided (for a number of reasons) to collect only qualitative data for my project. Therefore, to ensure the highest quality in research methodology, I’ve sought committee members with expertise in qualitative research. Their experience in and understanding of qualitative data collection and thematic analysis will be essential. Having a committee with members who are experience in qualitative research will not only help me maintain high research standards but also ensure that the data analysis process is robust, insightful, and accurate.
Interpersonal Consideration
But it’s not just about their qualifications. I’ve also thought about how well we are able work together. I have had some great experiences with several mentors in the past. So, aside from qualifications and professional and academic experience, I have also considered the personal experiences and interactions that I have had with the potential members of my committee. This is especially true for the individuals that I have invited to be the chair of my committee. When I’m working on my project, I hope to have a committee chair who is able to provide open dialogue, constructive feedback, and show a shared commitment to the success of my research
My committee picking process has been about finding a balance between business expertise, qualitative research skills, and our working chemistry. I am confident that this mix will give me the right support and guidance to tackle the challenges of my doctoral project. I am looking forward to working with the members of my committee, knowing that they will play a huge role in helping me reach my academic goals.
