Understanding how to paraphrase is an important skill for journalists to have. Here is an example of an effective paraphrasing of a quotation. You may also find more resources in the Ashford Writing Center’s Guidelines for Paraphrasing.

Tom Nelson, president of the citywide Parent Teachers Association: “Our major concern this year will be security in the schools, particularly in the high schools. We will be working with school officials on ways we can help create a safer environment for the education of our children. A number of incidents in the past year have been very disturbing to many parents. We are going to try to provide a way for those parents to make a real difference in their local schools.”

Tom Nelson, president of the Parent Teachers Association, said that the chief concern of the organization this year would be security, particularly in the high schools. Nelson said parents would be working with school officials to make the schools safer.
