Progress Reports (Part 1) (Assignment Information)

These reports are written to provide status information, including updates, on current work.   These reports are both internal (within a company) and external (outside the company).

Write a progress report on the status of obtaining your degree. This is the most popular choice for this assignment. It is also very rewarding because it allows you to see how far you have come with your degree and how far you have to go to finish it.

Now, I will show you how these reports are set up.

I. Introduction- You would tell what degree you are working on. For example, the following is a report describing the status of my degree in Criminal Justice. The report will cover the status of the degree from August 2017, when I started, until the present time.

II. Work Completed – You would describe what has already been done on your degree. The biggest discussion here will be classes. You may want to list all of the classes you completed. If you have taken a lot of classes, you may just summarize what you have done. For example, you may say that you have already completed all of your math and social science courses. If there were any problems in completing this work, you would describe those. A lot of you mentioned issues with teachers on the discussion list. You could mention that problem here. Maybe a bad teacher caused you to do poorly in a class. Maybe your car broke down last fall, which caused you to have trouble getting to school. Whatever the problems were, discuss them here. If you were able to solve the problem, you would also mention that solution here. For example, the bad teacher problem could have been solved by retaking the class over the summer. The car problem may have been solved by carpooling with your neighbor until the car was fixed.
One bit of advice, besides classes, you can mention clinical, internships, examinations, or any other work you completed that is required for your degree.

III. Work in Progress – This section would mainly describe work that is being done this semester. For example, what classes are you taking this semester? If there are any problems, you would bring those up here and explain what you are doing about them.

IV. Work To Be Completed – What work has to be done to finish your degree. This could include classes, examinations, internships, clinical, etc. If you anticipate problems, those could be discussed here. For example, you might say, my car has 385,000 miles on it, and green smoke pours from the exhaust when I start it in the morning (I am exaggerating); I don’t know if it will get me to school for another 2 years.  The possible solution you might mention would be to work extra hours over the summer to buy a new car.

V.  Conclusions and Recommendations – To conclude, you might say that although getting your degree has been a lot of work and a challenge, you have learned a great deal and feel the challenges now will help you on the job in the future. As far as recommendations, possibly you see that taking two classes this summer and one extra class next fall will allow you to graduate a semester earlier.
